Pernell Gerver's lecture and presentation "Putting the Garden to Bed" focuses on how to get the garden ready for the long winter ahead. In the perennial garden, the program covers cutting down perennials and mulching for winter protection. Winter protection of roses is also illustrated. In the annual flower garden taking cuttings of annuals to enjoy indoors over winter is shown step-by-step. Lifting and storing tender bulbs over winter is illustrated. In the vegetable garden, the focus is on fall cleanup, removing and composting debris, soil preparation, and cover crops. Preparing trees and shrubs for winter by watering deeply, using a wind screen for evergreens and broad-leaved evergreen shrubs, applying tree wraps to protect from wildlife damage, and applying antidesiccant to prevent drying out over winter are featured. Suggestions on what to do with all those fall leaves are also offered. Preparing the garden for the winter ahead ensures the garden gets off to a good start next season. Included is a question & answer session after the program as well as a plant sale of rare, hard-to-find, and useful plants and gardening products.
