Pernell Gerver's lecture and presentation entitled "Rock and Alpine Gardening" focuses on what a rock garden is, how to create a naturalistic rock garden, and the many alpines and dwarf plants suited for growing in a rock garden. Different types of rock gardens are described including a scree, moraine, boulder field, rock outcropping, and stone wall. Troughs, special planters made of a cement mixture called hypertufa and planted with alpines, are also featured. Proper placement of rocks as well as placement of plants are discussed. Included in the program are the many choice alpine plants and dwarf conifers that thrive in the ideal conditions of a rock garden. Each plant is illustrated and described in detail such as its flower color, flower shape, bloom season, plant height, and its use in the rock garden. Cultural instructions and proper growing conditions are discussed for each alpine. With proper placement of rocks and plants, the program shows you how to create a successful and beautiful rock garden of your own. Included is a question & answer session after the program as well as a plant sale of rare, hard-to-find, and useful plants and gardening products.
