Gardening in the shade presents both a challenge and an opportunity. There are different degrees of shade from dappled sunlight filtering through a canopy of trees to deep shade with no sunlight at all. In this program, Pernell will discuss the various types of shade including filtered shade, part shade, open shade, deep shade, and seasonal shade. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, groundcovers, vines, and bulbs that thrive in all types of shady conditions are featured. How to turn a shady location such as a woodlot into a colorful garden by thinning and limbing up trees to let in light, improving the soil, dealing with root competition, and creating flower beds is discussed. Plants for difficult conditions such as dry shade, deep shade, and moist soils in the shade are also highlighted. Included is a question & answer session after the program as well as a plant sale of rare, hard-to-find, and useful plants and gardening products.
